About the Program
How can the Social Arts and especially visual practices contribute to social change by helping people build the capacity to lean into the emerging future?
We stand at a threshold between what is and what could be—a moment of collective presencing. In this space of uncertainty and possibility, we will come together not to seek predefined answers but to sense and prototype what is emerging.
The transformative potential of awareness-based arts becomes increasingly evident as we face growing challenges regarding the environment, society and technology. Among the Social Arts,, generative scribing serves as a unique practice that enables systems to see and sense themselves more deeply. By intentionally listening—not only to the words and sentences but also to what is present and what wants to emerge from a conversation or situation—Scribing fosters a deeper collective understanding. It requires the scribe to suspend judgment or concepts, and to act authentically from what arises in the moment, from a place of service for the whole. This practice aligns with what Arawana Hayashi describes as the “True Move” in her book of the same name.
Social Arts are integral to the experience of Theory U, which help participants develop the inner condition required to engage in this work. Through drawing practices and embodiment exercises, we will explore the Presencing space between sensing and creating, between letting go and letting come where we connect to source and essence. These practices help attune the body and mind to sense what is emerging, providing a foundation for scribing that is authentic, precise, and deeply connected to the social field.
This program focuses on visual practice for Presencing as the primary practice, with SPT serving as support to deepen the participant’s capacity to see, sense, and express the emerging future. Drawing skills and prior knowledge of Theory U or SPT are helpful but not required; all that is needed is an openness to explore and act from this place of collective presence. Our aspiration is to create a space where new possibilities can emerge. As Otto Scharmer emphasizes, there is no limit to what we can collectively create once we align our attention, intention and agency on the scale of the whole.
By fostering an environment for both a visible and intangible experience, we aim to help create conditions that are needed for facing the challenges of our time and supporting planetary flourishing.
