Participatory Conversations/Dialogues
“One of the first notions I ever had of Dialogue was many years ago when I read of about an anthropologist who visited a North American Indian tribe, probably hunter-gatherers, of about 20 to 40 people. He saw that they frequently gathered together in a circle, and they talked and talked. Nobody seemed to be in authority, and they didn’t have any particular agenda or any particular purpose. They made no decisions – they just talked. But at the end they separated and seemed to know what to do. They had established a relationship with each other so that they could then deal with their practical problems and really communicate, and not get into the state we are often in where we are fighting over the problems and not communicating.” Physicist David Bohm (Author of On Dialogue)

As we work to face and respond to challenges we collectively face in our world today, it is more important than ever to foster relationships for creating better futures for all together.
One way to do this is through conversations that are human to human, free of judgement and assumptions, with conditions conducive for shifts in perception or, at the very least, automatic thinking. What happens next, of course, depends on the group.
Dialogue (inspired by Bohm Dialogue) provides a straightforward approach to creating the space for these types of conversations to occur within groups from a size of 6 - 40 people. It provides the way to sit, think and create coherent meaning together no matter where we are in the world.
Practically speaking, this dialogic process can be used before any type of meetings/ conferences / seminars / workshops, where participants will be envisioning, creating, deciding together. It creates the conditions for spacious, inspired thinking which invites insights from all in the space.
Intention
• Exploring Potential: Reconnecting & Creating Together
Objectives
• Listening fully to each other and inner self, speaking “from” or when moved to, creating knowledge, making meaning together.
• Developing group coherence and cohesion, experiencing more openness, trust and freedom within this space.
• Engaging in generative listening and inquiry through group conversations, which lead to new perspectives and insights in the present moment ~ these are good for the whole, for all of life, and come from deeper knowing.
Leadership outcomes and takeaways (Note: That all of us - are leaders)
- Self-Awareness – discover and revisit own perceptions
- Group Shared Space and Cohesion – feel safe and engage fully with others
- Growth – grow together with peers, as you let go of judgements and welcome what’s emerging
- Action Confidence – engage in more meaningful actions as confidence and trust increase
Methodology of the generative dialogue process
A seed idea is provided by the facilitator and participants share one after another. The facilitator captures and writes down the key ideas and this provides the data for further activities. The facilitator’s role is to be present and support conditions which allow all in the space to be fully heard and seen.
Key prerequisites
During a workshop/seminar, to create conditions for participants to create a vision that fully benefits all stakeholders, a prerequisite is for participants to be fully present to themselves and others: be curious, listen fully, intend to suspend judgement, share authentically, observe thoughts and feelings as data. In this way, safety and trust emerge within and through the group space. Everything is slowed down, grounded, and embodied in the silence – much like that of people sitting around a campfire: stories are weaving together, people are listening and sharing, trust and rapport is growing – it is an ongoing process and it needs to be attended to from the beginning. It is a way of being together in a group, team, company, society... it is the process... it is the how. This allows those participating to get clear on their why and clearer on the what, where, when...etc. (considering all stakeholder perspectives).
Who we are
We are ongoing members of Presencing Institute’s u.lab 2x since 2021 and members of Awareness @Work who want to participate in co-building a better future by reimaging and reshaping how we communicate and come together in a group, and virtually.
Hence, we are offering our experience and knowledge to support people in shifting the ‘seat’ of their mindsets and ‘brainstorming’ processes so as to operate from a broader and deeper level: the field of consciousness. Together, we are developing/deepening the ability to sit and have conversations which create thriving groups and communities.
